DEFINITION: Anchor Text
Anchor Text are the words used within the link. Search engines use this text to determine the subject of your page and the targeted page.
For example:

<a href="index.html">anchor text</a>
( In Place Of Anchor Text, Obviously Label Your Link With Keywords )

Back in the day alot of people would flood the headers of their websites with Anchor Text (Your simple, everyday text link) And the would use the exact same keywords everytime, in the attempt to fool the search engines into making them think that their website was 100% About those keywords, thus increasing their ranking within the engines.

It was not long afterwards that the engines caught onto these schemes. Seeing the same keyword in every link, was un-natural and obviously a gimmick to trick the engines.

So while having strategic placement of Text links is a must, do NOT over due it. It has to be natural. You do not want the same keywords every other word when it comes to your link. You will be penalized.

Vary the keywords used to describe the link, but try to keep them similiar to your topic at hand.

The key is natural. Do not be Obnoxious, Do not try and cheat the system. Your success will pan out without shady undertakings. Besides, if you have 30 links at the top of your page all labeled FREE PRODUCT NOW! BUY ME! etc. Who in the right mind would actually trust your site? It all looks pretty shady.
